The interrelationship of things...
- Shapes and forms share a relationship in space – on paper or in 3D/4D : Positioning two forms near each other changes our perception of each individual shape. Their lines or masses seem to flow together or repel each other, to clash or blend harmoniously as they engage in a changing visual/aural conversation together.
- Orthodox Christian Icons take advantage of this understanding. They use carefully placed forms and colours that have a ‘living’ relationship that leads the viewer’s eyes on an endlessly mesmeric journey over its surface moving through foreground, background, minute detail and endless colour variations.
- Islamic art uses complex geometry to achieve similar effects to create an endless, eternal movement of guided, meditative flow towards the divine.
- Similarly some of the most beautiful, engaging products and designs use the same understanding to create flowing dynamic relationships to create flow, rhythm and harmony.
