RAPID MODELLING

Intro

•   Drawings simulate APPEARANCE

•   Mock-ups simulate EXPERIENCE

•   Prototypes create a USEABLE but unrefined product.

Use mock ups to discover, not just show- models and mock-ups are used to find the answers to all the problems and questions you are trying to solve - they are not the end product in themselves.

What we do when we model:

  • Seek to answer specific questions
  • Seek to discover NEW questions to allow better understanding
  • Test our thinking- nobody ever get it right first time - by trying out an idea you will learn a lot more when it fails. Fail fast & fail often! We want to fail to find out what works and what doesn't, so to FAIL is literally a Fantastic Attempt ILearning
  • Build at full scale - so to allow prototypes to be handled and evaluated in use, to feel the object's presence, it's relationship to the body, and experience it's potential usability.
  • Build rough - early 'Franken-prototypes' are made from found materials lashed together with tape and blu-tack to give a general experience
  • Limiting the number of elements reduces time taken, allows more models to be made more quickly, and only as the work progresses models become more complex.
  • Lo-resolution sketches and models get more feedback, and feedback that is more useful. They allow non-specialists to get involved and they allow ideas to come and go - the longer you spend refining a drawing the more invested you are and the less likely you are to develop the design or listen to feedback.

The key to modelling is to use materials appropriately to test ideas.

It is sound design practise to have a range of pre-prepared resources to allow students to fully exploit the three main methods of making rapid models.

Each method should be selected to suit the product you are making, but every method could be utilised as the design outcome will be greatly affected by the peculiarities of the individual technique.
