DESIGN ITERATION - USING 'NOT DRAWING'

Force ideas to happen fast and in volume:

  1. Make a sketch model- any appropriate material
  2. Photograph the user modelling the product as it is intended to be used.
  3. Use a printout as the basis for a series of tracings that are quickly developed into various iterations.
  4. Add in additional research.
  5. Annotate intentions and key points.

For designers who think they can't draw or need to draw something that they can't easily conceptualise (or if they need to draw hands  etc) use 'Not Drawings'-

Make a rough sketch model in 3D, photograph it and use tracings to create a range of iterations. This is the result of 15 minutes work and uses 1 sheet of A4 tracing paper cut into quarters.

It chronicles design thinking and develops a simple concept for a one-handed gaming/PC interface from very basic and rough outline to a more developed proposal.

In evidence are the thought processes that involve consideration of ergonomics, materials, technology (electronics), user's needs and function/affordances. There is also some limited analysis.
