Evaluating
own ideas and products
8
Discuss with the users of their product the extent to which it meets the original
design criteria and refine criteria further
15 minutes introduction with completion for homework
This is an activity which can be used in a variety of ways to evaluate pupils’ designs and
those of others.
In this example it is used to help pupils conduct an evaluation with the users of the
product they have designed.
CAFEQUE is an acronym representing:
Cost
Aesthetics
Function
Ergonomics
Quality
User
Environment
Distribute the handout. Explain the acronym and what each of the criteria represents.
Pupils should ask the user for their evaluation of the product against each of the seven criteria. The user should be asked to give each of the criteria a score on a four-point scale (3, 2, 1, 0) and, more importantly, to add a comment about the success or failure of the product. Users should also be asked to make an overall comment about the product. Their individual scores for the seven criteria will be added to provide a total.
If more than one user is being interviewed, their comparative scores and comments could be analysed.
